True-May traveled to Palisade with two detective associates named Zaria Rios and Nimkii, an Ojibwe native American. Zaria immigrated from Mexico and was hired away from her janitor job at the Chicago Police station. The Pinkerton Agency hired her to be an anti-union spy. Nimkii, a Chicago native, was hired for the same reason.
Once the trio reached Palisade, they discovered no union agitators were present because the mines were shutting down. The reported violence was fake. Just when True-May vowed to return to Chicago on the next train east, a real murder took place. That is what led to Trouble in Palisade.
